Our Story

Three decades of working across every part of the industry shaped the business you see today

1996
Bought his first truck
At 20, Scott bought his first truck and started subcontracting in container transport. Hands-on in the cab and around the port from day one, building the foundation of a 30-year career in freight and logistics.
2000
Office and operations
After several years on the road, Scott moved into office and operations work, building deeper knowledge of logistics coordination, planning, and how a transport business actually runs.
2005
Joining Hobbs Brothers
Scott joined Hobbs Brothers at Darling Harbour, one of the largest timber handling operations in the Southern Hemisphere at the time. Over a decade there, he built deep expertise in high-volume freight handling, port logistics, and managing complex jobs at scale.
2006
Major infrastructure project and the steel pivot
Scott managed the transport of one of the first tunnel boring machines to enter Australia, coordinating multiple trucks across complex on-wharf operations. Mid-project, the Russian vessel was arrested by the Australian government, halting the second phase of the job. Scott redeployed his fleet within 24 hours to move 2,000 tonnes of steel coil out of Darling Harbour over three days. It was the moment that opened up his future in steel freight.
2008
Move into container logistics
As containerisation reshaped the freight industry and the timber market began to shrink, Scott moved into container transport and unpacking, positioning early for what would become the dominant force in Australian freight logistics.
2010
Senior leadership roles
Scott took on senior leadership roles including General Manager at Quality Transport (which had acquired Hobbs Brothers) and Operations Manager at Gregory's. Years of running fleet operations, managing teams, and driving business performance for established carriers.
2014
Founded Scott Lovatt Container Cartage
After decades in the industry, Scott launched his own business with a team of two: himself and Jody Penny, who is still with the company today. In year one, the business secured the inaugural Costco Australia contract. Year-on-year growth of 20 to 30 percent followed through reliable service and word-of-mouth referrals. Later that year, Victoria Edmonds joined the team in Operations. Scott had employed her at Gregorys.
2015
Trialling the unpack business
Scott trialled the unpack business out of a Goodman facility in Botany for 10 months, testing demand before scaling. The unpack model proved highly profitable, and the warehouse and unpacking arm of the business was officially launched. Kieran Black joined the team to learn how to run the trucks after leaving professional Rugby in the UK.
2016
Milperra facility and fleet growth
Moved into a larger facility at Milperra (Ashford Avenue with BCQ), expanding the fleet to approximately 14 trucks and increasing trailer and freight capacity across the operation.
2019
Relocation to Prestons
Relocated to a larger facility on Illaroo Road, Prestons. The new site provided the infrastructure to support continued growth across both transport and warehousing.
2020
COVID-19 growth phase
As global supply chains shifted, demand for freight and warehousing surged. The business doubled in size as importers over-ordered to absorb supply chain shocks and warehousing capacity became critical. A second warehouse was added at Lynn Parade, Prestons, and unpacking capacity grew to 100 to 120 containers per week.
2022
Investment in modern fleet and systems
Invested in a modern Volvo FH fleet (540 to 600 horsepower) with full A-double and B-double capability. Implemented NHVAS mass and maintenance management accreditation, plus full in-cab and external camera systems across every vehicle.
2026
Established large-scale operation
The business operates 22 trucks, over 100 trailers, and more than 140 pieces of equipment, including six A-doubles and five sideloaders. With a team of 42 across operations, transport, and warehousing, the company unpacks up to 120 containers per week while continuing to invest in new fleet, equipment, and capability.

FAQ

Questions we’re commonly asked before a job starts

How long has Scott Lovatt Container Cartage been operating?

The business was established in 2013, but the experience behind it goes back over 30 years. Scott spent decades working in container transport before starting the company, and several members of the operations team have been with the business since the early days.

How big is your team and fleet?

We currently have 42 team members across operations, transport, and warehousing. The fleet includes sideloaders, B-doubles, A-doubles, single trailers, and a dedicated unpack facility with heavy forklifts, a reach stacker, and unpack jibs. We run our own vehicles with our own drivers.

Do you use subcontractors?

Our core work is handled by our own team with our own equipment. That's how we maintain consistency and accountability across every job.

Can you handle a sudden increase in volume?

It depends on the scope, and we'll be honest about what we can and can't absorb. We run a disciplined operation and won't take on work that compromises service for existing clients. If we can do it, we'll confirm it. If we can't, we'll tell you upfront.

What industries do you typically work with?

Steel companies, importers and exporters, manufacturing, food, and industrial businesses. We also work with freight forwarders and customs brokers who need a carrier they can rely on for complex container work.

What makes your unpack operation different?

Steel and heavy freight unpacks are a core part of our daily work. We have the equipment and experience to handle oversized, overmass, and difficult freight safely. Most general carriers either avoid this work or improvise on the day. We plan it properly and execute it routinely.

Who will I actually deal with day to day?

Our operations team. There's no sales department sitting between you and the people managing the job. When you call or email, you're speaking with the team that plans, allocates, and runs the work.

Are you the cheapest option?

No, and we're upfront about that. Our clients work with us because missed slots, detention charges, damage, and poor communication cost far more than the rate difference. If the priority is the lowest price regardless of outcome, we're probably not the right fit.

What areas do you cover?

Sydney and greater NSW. We handle statewide deliveries once freight has been unpacked, but we don't operate interstate. This keeps the team stable and the work consistent.
